Honoring National Purple Heart Day
In honor of National Purple Heart Day, the Memorial was lit in purple on August 7, 2019. The Purple Heart was first instituted by George Washington in 1782, and was then known as the Badge of Military Merit. The Purple Heart is awarded to those wounded or killed in the line of duty.
