The Grand Lodge of Ohio was formed at a Grand Convention held at the Old Statehouse in Chillicothe, Ohio on January 4, 5, 7 & 8, 1808. Delegates were sent to the convention from American Union Lodge № 1 and Scioto Lodge № 2, chartered by the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts; Cincinnati Lodge № 13, chartered by the Grand Lodge of Kentucky; Erie Lodge № 47 and New England Lodge № 48 chartered by the Grand Lodge of Connecticut; and Lodge of Amity Lodge 105 chartered by the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania.
Ohio Masons owe a debt of gratitude to all of these Lodges but especially to Erie Lodge for approaching the other five and encouraging them to consider the idea of forming a Grand Lodge for the state of Ohio.
The Grand Lodge of Ohio has 461 local lodges and approximately 80,000 members. Its oldest lodge, American Union Lodge № 1, was chartered in 1776. Famous Ohioans such as Pres. James Garfield, Pres. and Chief Justice William Howard Taft, Pres. William McKinley and astronaut John Glenn have been members of Ohio’ lodges.
